Summer in the Shed: Good Work, Good Company, and a Bit of Sawdust

There’s something about summer that brings new life into the shed. The days are longer, the doors stay open a bit later, and the place is full of energy, conversation, and the steady hum of tools at work.

At Men in Sheds, it’s not just about building things—it’s about building each other up. We’re a mental health charity at heart, and the shed is where people come not just to make things, but to feel useful, heard, and part of something.

Projects That Matter

This summer has seen a big rise in community projects. We’ve been building planters for local schools, and taking on odd jobs for charities that need a hand. It’s satisfying work—and it means a lot to know our time and skills are helping others.

We’ve had more requests coming in than usual, and it’s great to see the community recognizing what we can do. Even better, it gives everyone here a real sense of purpose.

Staying Safe as We Grow

As things get busier, we’ve been stepping up our approach to safety. We’ve improved the dust extraction, reorganised, and added clearer signage around the workshop. It’s an ongoing job—we’re always learning and improving. But the goal is simple: keep the shed safe, comfortable, and welcoming for everyone. And we look out for each other too. When something’s not right, say something, do something.

Learning, Sharing, Supporting

You don’t need to be a master craftsman to join in. One of the best things about the shed is how freely people share what they know. If you’re new, someone will show you the ropes. If you’ve been around a while, you’ll probably find yourself teaching without even meaning to.

That passing-on of knowledge builds confidence, connection, and community. And honestly, it’s often just as important as the project you’re working on.

Come See What We’re About

If you’ve ever thought about joining, summer’s a great time to drop by. Whether you’re looking to learn, lend a hand, or just have a chat and a biscuit, there’s a space for you at the bench.
